Transferred Trust Similar to word of mouth advertising, this is the idea that trust can be transferred from one person to another. Imagine that I trust you and you trust someone else. If you tell me that you trust another person, we'll call her Jane, then I will trust Jane to some degree simply because I trust you and you said she is trustworthy. We know this to be true in business. If we tell a colleague or customer to use someone else in business, our own reputation is on the line.

We do not know how far trust can be transferred. It will make it to one person fairly intact, but with each additional person in the chain, the level of trust is weakened. If Jane tells me that she trusts Mike, I will trust her less than I trust you because I have no experience with her yet. By the time we get to Mike, I may have no reason to trust his recommendations. This is unfortunate, because with just three degrees of separation, we might have been able to transfer trust around the state.
