Downtime |

Today has been an extremely frustrating day. I have been using the same web host
for more than 5 years. During the last year, the amount of time my web sites were not available has been increasing in frequency. I recently upgraded my account in the hopes that the situation would improve. Regrettably, not only has there been no improvement, it seems as though service has gotten worse. Today my sites have been unavailable most of the day and as I write this I still cannot reach any of my sites. This type of problem makes it difficult to encourage others to have an internet focused campaign.
Perhaps a public-private partnership between government and industry could lead to clear standards for defining "up time". An up time rating of 99% would mean that in a year, a web site would be unavailable no more than 88 hours, still a long time. Even 99.9% up time is 8.8 hours of down time in a year. Those small differences can add up. Six Sigma service means 99.9999% up time and translates to only about 48 seconds of down time in a year. That level of service guarantee can be very costly. If there were standards, then when you were shopping for web services you would be able to compare levels of service the way you now can compare on-time arrival for airplanes and decide if you were willing to pay more for better service. Under the current system where there are no standards, most of us are limited to a sense that the web site is unavailable too often for too long.
As you can tell, (after about 14 hours down) the site is now up. It appears that our server was the recipient of a malicious attack and measures have been taken to reduce the chance it will happen again.
