Last night Sutter County held an open planning meeting which drew two to three
dozen people. I sat at a table outside the meeting with campaign signs and literature in case anyone wanted to talk. My perspective is that people should generally be left alone and this was my first "public appearance". It is difficult to generate interest among people hurrying home who are already tired of all the campaigning and had been looking forward to a break from it. Finding the balance point between engaging voters to participate in the campaign and not intruding on their space, continues to be a work in progress.
As they were leaving, I did ask meeting attendees about the county's presentation and the discussion which followed. Not surprisingly, flood control continues to be in the spotlight. Some respondents asked about the campaign. There continues to be genuine interest in our new campaign process. The question remains whether this interest will generate individual actions of support at home.
There were a few elected officials at the meeting. I observed that some (though not most) of them seemed uncomfortable with supporting this type of campaign, though maybe it was just me. Since neither the City Council nor the County Board of Supervisors are particularly partisan, this was an unexpected hurdle. Perhaps there are aspirations for partisan offices. Under the current system, supporting a non-partisan might be similar to heresy, questioning validity of "the party". In a campaign directed at the People, each elected official is the same as every other voter, an individual who can participate in the campaign and enroll others. The benefit of support from elected officials isn't in their official capacity or their endorsement, which we are not seeking. We want elected officials to join with us because they have demonstrated a strong passion to run for office and we would like their passion to join our efforts for change.
