Primary vs. Signatures |

Election results for the primary are in for the second Assembly District.
In the Republican primary, the winner earned 17,127 votes, with his competitors earning 8757, 7115 and 5008. I had originally thought that having to collect signatures equal to 3% of the voter turn out in the last election (224,175 x 3% = 6,726) was a reasonable hurdle to determine if a candidate should be on the ballot. Now that I have seen the voter turn out in the primary and collected signatures for a month, I'm not so sure that the hurdle shouldn't be slightly lower. The period during which an independent candidate can collect signatures starts about a month before the primary and ends two months after the primary. Not only is this a short period of time, but the lack of interest in the primary may negatively impact one's ability to collect signatures. If someone already on the ballot cannot get 6726 people to vote for them out of 224,000 when all the voter must do is draw a line anonymously, it will certainly be much harder to get 6726 people to write their name, signature and home address on the petition for a potential candidate. Isn't it an interesting paradox that as we encourage more people to participate in the process we make it harder for individuals outside of the party system to run for office to change the system?
