4 June 2008 How we got here 417 A colleague recently asked me to publish what we were doing so that it could be repeated suggesting to me that a blog might have value.

So, how did we get here? It started in the 2002 race for California governor. It was my opinion that few Californians want either candidate to be governor. This opinion was bolstered by lowest voter turnout, highest percentage of voters voting independent, and the successful recall shortly thereafter even though the elected governor hadn't really done anything sufficiently wrong to be recalled (in my opinion). That 2002 election cost more than $100 million. What a waste of resources.

I then realized that we needed to improve the process and the origins of this campaign began. In fact, until Mr. Bustamante and Mr. Shwarzeneggar joined the fray, I considered implementing this process in the 2003 recall election. The process is all around you on this site, so I won't delve into details about it.

My wife was the one who initially suggested that now might be the right time to run for office. We discussed what needed to be accomplished before taking the next step. I accomplished most of the list. In what generally represents the order, these are the items:
Made a list of things needing to be done and the approximate order
Contacted family members to get their opinions and then notify them of my plans
Contact friends and colleagues about my plans and seeking input
Complete the paperwork for intention to run at the Sutter County Clerk's Office
Contact the FPPC to clarify some issues unique to this kind of campaign
Create the initial web site for the campaign
Send a blast email to people that I know (I decided one would not be intrusive)
Create the campaign committee "Ozeran for Assembly" and fund it with a $4700 loan (if money remained, only a loan can be returned)
Notify the FPPC of the creation and funding of the committee by the 10 day deadline
Scan the petition for signatures provided by the County Clerk's office and make it available on the web site so that voters in the distrcit can circulate petitions in their neighborhoods
Take petitions around for signatures, explaining the campaign, encouraging others to circulate petitions
Continuously update and upgrade the web site; get help from someone who is much better at design and design elements
Contact newspapers in the largest population centers to arrange advertising

That pretty much brings us up to date. More next time.
